The first 1000 days of a child’s life are the most important part of their development, but often in South Africa, children from different socioeconomic backgrounds do not have the same developmental opportunities as the kids in the center of the city.
As a response, Embrace, a social justice advocate, asked us to find a way to bring 1000 children from all over Cape Town, to be seen, heard and celebrated in the center of Cape Town.
We designed an interactive treasure hunt, in a public park, that invited the kids to just be kids, have their voice heard, play with each other, and feel important.
Busloads of children arrived from all over, and for some, it was the first time that they had ever been into a park.
The map prop enabled every child to be in the moment, encouraging them to collect stickers through actively participating in the various early learning activities that formed the experience. The interactive treasure hunt allowed all the kids, for one day, to have an equal playing ground.
